Charles James Kirk grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, the son of an architect father and a mental health counselor mother. An Eagle Scout in his youth, Kirk showed early civic instincts, volunteering on a U.S. Senate campaign at 16 and writing political commentary for Breitbart News while still in high school.
After one semester at Harper College in Palatine, Illinois, Kirk made the bold decision to leave at 18 and, with little more than conviction and the encouragement of Tea Party activist Bill Montgomery, founded Turning Point USA in 2012. What began with no money and no connections grew into one of the largest conservative youth organizations in the country, with chapters on thousands of campuses and annual revenues approaching $100 million. The organization later expanded into Turning Point Action and Turning Point Faith.
Kirk authored several books throughout his career, including Time for a Turning Point (2016), Campus Battlefield (2018), the New York Times bestseller The MAGA Doctrine, The College Scam (2022), and Right Wing Revolution (2024). His final book, Stop, in the Name of God: Why Honoring the Sabbath Will Transform Your Life, was released posthumously in December 2025. He also hosted The Charlie Kirk Show, a nationally syndicated program that surpassed 130 million downloads by 2023.
Among his many recognitions, Kirk was named to the Forbes "30 Under 30" list, received an honorary doctorate from Liberty University in 2019, and was ranked among the world's top ten most influential conservatives in 2025. He was married to Erika Kirk and was the father of two children.
President Donald Trump awarded Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom — the nation's highest civilian honor — in October 2025. He passed away on September 10, 2025, at the age of 31 as a result of an assassination at one of his public speaking engagements.
