In one series, the original writings of the universally acknowledged teachers of the Catholic, Protestant, Eastern Orthodox, Jewish, and Islamic traditions have been critically selected, translated, and introduced by internationally recognized scholars and spiritual leaders. Born into an observant Jewish family in Breslau in present-day Poland, Edith Stein (1891-1942) embarked on a spiritual journey that led through atheism to Catholicism, and ultimately to her becoming a Discalced Carmelite nun with the name Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, During World War II, she and her sister Rosa, who had also converted to Catholicism, were arrested by the Nazis and met their deaths at the concentration camp at Auschwitz. A philosopher who wrote her doctoral dissertation under the direction of famed phenomenologist Edmund Husserl, Stein would not readily be thought of as an author on spirituality. And yet, even some of her highly philosophical writings hold spiritual treasures while others are more directly related to the spiritual life. Edith Stein: Selected Writings, the first book to present Edith Stein specifically as a spiritual author, highlights themes related to spirituality in Stein's output, offering selections of her works in a wide range of genres and revealing a wide range of spiritual concerns. For those interested in learning more about Stein's writings, but who often find them too dense or challenging, this volume makes some of the spiritual gems of her thought more accessible.
