Tajiri was influenced by his childhood hobby of insect collecting, as well as the urbanization of the rural areas near his home. In high school, Tajiri became fascinated with arcade games, and put most of his energy into gaming, learning how to program himself. During technical school, he wrote for and edited his own video gaming tip magazine Game Freak, which eventually evolved into the development company of the same name. Upon seeing a Game Boy's ability to connect to other Game Boys, Tajiri was inspired to create a game which embodied the collection and companionship of his childhood hobby. The game took six years to complete, and was not expected to sell well. Instead, the game sparked a multi-billion dollar franchise and reinvigorated Nintendo handheld gaming. Tajiri has been named a video gaming innovator, and has made numerous lists of the top, best, or most influential video game developers. He has worked on numerous other games, including Pulseman. Tajiri has also been diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. Tajiri was born on August 28, 1965 in Tokyo to a Nissan car salesman and a housewife.
