Socially Conscious Online Bookseller Takes 36% of the Vote to Land Top Slot

Atlanta, GA (May 6, 2009) - BusinessWeek.com SmallBiz this week ranked Better World Books No. 1 on its first annual roundup of "America's Most Promising Social Entrepreneurs."

The idea behind BusinessWeek.com's new roundup was to uncover trailblazing companies, in operation for at least a year, which aim to turn a profit while tackling societal problems. After over 12,000 BusinessWeek.com readers cast votes for 25 finalist companies, Better World Books took first place with 36% of the vote.

Better World Books is a fast-growing social enterprise that collects donated books and sells them online to fund literacy initiatives worldwide. Through partnerships with more than 1,800 college campuses and 1,500 libraries nationwide, Better World Books has generated over $6 million for its non-profit, library and college partners, donated 1.2 million books to literacy programs globally, and diverted over 22 million books from landfills.

"We're excited that important outlets like BusinessWeek are recognizing the growing significance of social entrepreneurship. We are also honored that so many grass roots supporters voted for us as the social enterprise that holds the most promise," said David Murphy, CEO of Better World Books. "On their behalf and with their support, we pledge our continued efforts to make this a better world... one book at a time."
