Sigma Tau Delta
Help break the cycle of poverty through education
and literacy... while raising funds for your chapter!

Sigma Tau Delta has partnered with Better World Books to provide an ongoing opportunity for chapters to participate in biannual book drives running February 1st - July 31st and August 1st - January 31st.

Fall 2008 Winner: Alvernia University, Kappa Pi Chapter

Better World Books collects and sells books online to fund literacy initiatives worldwide. This campus program provides each Sigma Tau Delta chapter with the opportunity to foster global literacy, while at the same time raising funds for their chapter. We partner directly with your chapter to host an on campus book drive to benefit one of the following nonprofit global literacy partners of your choice:

The Better World Book Drive is a turnkey operation. We supply promotional materials, packing supplies, and cover all shipping costs.

Every Sigma Tau Delta chapter will have the opportunity to earn additional cash for chapter use (.50 per accepted book, $1.00 per accepted prescreened book, $1.25 per accepted book when more than 1,000 accepted books are collected). Better World Books will supply a scan gun to help identify books that will be accepted. Approximately 80% of books that are scanned are accepted.

Student members who actively participate in leading one successful BWB chapter book drive will also be eligible to apply for the 2010 Better World Books Summer Internship, located in Alpharetta, Georgia.

To start your chapter's book drive: email campus@betterworldbooks.com.

Convention

Join us for the 2010 Sigma Tau Delta Convention, Storytellers!

No matter how different our backgrounds, a universal connection that we have with one another is story, and the 2010 Convention will be a great place for each of us to spin a yarn. Call it alchemy or enchantment or magic…whatever you want to label it, there is no denying the power of a good story.

Approximately 800 members of English honor societies gather at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis Riverfront to celebrate culture, language, literature, service, and writing.

Visit englishconvention.org for registration, program schedule, and more information.

Participate in workshops, enjoy open mic night and attend talks with our featured speakers:

The National English Honor Society (NEHS), founded and sponsored by Sigma Tau Delta, is the only national organization exclusively for high school students and faculty who, in the field of English, merit special note for past and current accomplishments. Individual high schools are invited to petition for a local chapter, through which individuals may be inducted into Society membership. Immediate benefits of affiliation will be national recognition, scholarship eligibility, and opportunities for national networking with others who share enthusiasm for, and accomplishment in, the language arts.

The Book Thief NEHS is encouraging a "common reader" for members of chapters to discuss during the coming school year; we have selected The Book Thief by Markus Zusak as the first text for this project. Scholarship applicants will be expected to respond to a prompt based on the novel as part of the scholarship application process for 2009-2010.
