Better World Books Appoints Maura Varian UK Managing Director

Company Veteran Moves Overseas to Direct Edinburgh Office

ATLANTA, GA (August 17, 2009) - Better World Books announces today the appointment of Maura Varian to the position of UK Managing Director. Varian, previously the Logistics Manager for Better World Books, working out of Mishawaka, IN, will move overseas to direct all aspects of Better World Books' UK operation, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Better World Books, a for-profit venture, collects and sells new and used books online, donating a portion of each sale to help fund literacy initiatives worldwide.

"For years now, Maura has been an indispensible member of the Better World Books team," said David Murphy, president and CEO of Better World Books. "We are thrilled to have her head up our UK operation. Maura brings a tremendous amount of experience, skill, passion and enthusiasm to this new opportunity and to our entire organization. We look forward to scaling our operation and delivering on our mission in the UK under Maura's leadership."

Ms. Varian joined the company in 2006, with several years experience in the data management field specializing in direct mail marketing. "I started with Better World Books while pursuing a degree to teach," said Varian, "in part because Better World valued education enough to be flexible with my course schedule. However, I fell in love with the business model and after graduating felt I could make a bigger impact staying with the company."

Launched in 2008 and operating out of the Edinburgh, Scotland Distribution Center, Better World Books UK has collected over 150,000 books to date, serving 70 libraries and facilitating on-campus book drives at over 20 schools nationwide. A recently announced associate member of the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges, BWB UK is already working closely with several UK-based literacy organizations, including READ International and the National Literacy Trust.

"The opportunities to expand our success abroad are exciting and limitless," said Varian. "I'm looking forward to taking on a different role within the Better World family and bringing our message of socially responsible and environmentally-conscious business to a new audience."

A graduate from Indiana State University in South Bend with a degree in General Studies, Ms. Varian hails from New York, NY.
