When Baseball Went to War is the stirring account of how Feller and other major leaguers answered their nation's call, leaving their homes and loved ones for duty, honor, and country. The lucky ones sacrificed only a few years of their playing careers; others sacrificed their lives. Men like Yogi Berra, Dom DiMaggio, Monte Irvin, Jerry Coleman, Moe Berg, Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, and Warren Spahn, called heroes at the ballpark by their adoring fans, discovered true heroism in the lives of their fellow servicemen and women who never made it home.

then this book will bring them back to you like a blue darter over second base. The cd that comes with the book is worth the cost. Hearing your cardboard heros talk, sometimes reluctantly, about how the war affected their lives is awe inspiring and give new meaning to the phrase "greatest generation." Since I was only seven years old in 1949 I really didn't understand the gravity of what our country had been through now it seems clearer this cd helps a lot. The memories, I must admit are bittersweet, that are aroused when Bob Feller talks about barnstorming with his team (white professionals) and playing to sold out crowds against another service team (black professionals) leaves you with a feeling that our country has come a long way...and baseball in the day had a lot to do with that even if it didn't happen as soon as it should of happened.
The journey of military baseball captures generations of Americans who love our country and our game. Having the opportunity to meet some of these men prior to reading about their challenges is an honor. Being invited to contribute stories of our modern generation was truly a humbling experience. The majority of our U.S. Military All-Stars continue the "Red, White and Blue Tour" each summer at their own expense to promote the awareness of everyone who ever wore a uniform in defense of our nation. It is a profound responsibility proudly inherited by the newest 9-11 generation of warfighters who defend our freedom at the tip of the spear and return to share the experiences with millions around the world. The next chapter is being written today as the first military baseball farm system has been created for our brave armed forces for generations to come.
