About the Book

Roberto Bolano (1953-2003) has caught on like a house on fire, and The Romantic Dogs, a bilingual collection of forty-four poems, offers American readers their first chance to encounter this literary phenomenon as a poet: his own first and strongest literary persona. These poems, wide-ranging in forms and length, have appeared in magazines such as Harper's, Threepenny Review, The Believer, Boston Review, Soft Targets, Tin House, The Nation, Circumference, ... more

Used Like New(1 Copy): Softcover. First Edition. First Printing. 141 pages. As New. Posthumous collection of poems. Now considered a contemporary classic. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents for the very first time Roberto Bolano's searingly beautiful poetry in a meticulously edited Bilingual Edition (the Spanish original on the left-hand page, the English translation on the right). The 44 poems represent what Bolano's critics and admirers regard to be his finest (he wrote five poetry collections in all). Bolano has been called contemporary literature' s "patron saint" because the consistently high level of his virtuosity is almost miraculous when one sees it as having been achieved during a brief and miserable personal life. It was as though he turned to literature not just to complement or complete but to change his life altogether. By the time of his untimely death in 2003 at the age of 50, Bolano was universally regarded as the greatest Spanish-language novelist of our time. Bolano himself hoped to be remembered for his poetry, which he gave up after his marriage and the birth of his child, deciding quite rightly that he was now responsible not just for himself but for his family's future, and that it would be more realistic to earn a living by writing prose fiction. His admirers believe that like Borges, whom he considered to be the greatest Spanish writer of the 20th century, his prose was made possible by and is an extension of his poetry. If so, any definitive appraisal of his large body of work (written non-stop in little over a decade) must take into account the poetry that he reluctantly abandoned. A "must-have" title for Roberto Bolano collectors. This title is now highly collectible. This is the only copy of the First American Edition available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. All other copies available online are subsequent printings. A rare copy thus. One of the greatest writers of our time. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ROBERTO BOLANO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0811218015.

These poems, wide-ranging in forms and length, have appeared in magazines such as Harper's, Threepenny Review, The Believer, Boston Review, Soft Targets, Tin House, The Nation, Circumference, A Public Space, and Conduit. Bolano's poetic voice is like no other's: "At that time, I'd reached the age of twenty/and I was crazy. /I'd lost a country/but won a dream./Long as I had that dream/nothing else mattered...."
