About the Book

Set in Romania at the height of Ceauescu's reign of terror, "The Land of Green Plums" tells the story of a group of young people who leave the impoverished province for the city in search of better prospects and camaraderie. But their hopes are ravaged, because the city, no less than the countryside, bears everywhere the mark of the dictatorship's corrosive touch. Used Like New(1 Copy): Hardcover. First Edition. First Printing. 242 pages. Fine in Fine dust jacket. Discreet remainder stripe on top corner. The author's second novel to be translated into English. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in an extremely small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The book is now rare. The DJ design is stunningly beautiful, utilizing an iconic image by the Czech photographer Jan Saudek from "Love, Life, Death & Other Such Trifles". Presents one of the most ferocious indictments of Communist totalitarianism in novel form. In luminous, poetic, transparent prose (Muller's work would be unbearable were it not for the sheer beauty of her prose), she shows how an all-powerful state system "comes to inhabit every human realm and how everyone, even the strongest, must either bend to the oppressors or resist them and thereby perish" (Publisher's blurb). As a portrait of how human beings become dehumanized, dispensable, and disposable, Muller's novel is one of the bleakest anyone is likely to encounter in modern literature. Muller shows in the most harrowing, concrete detail how idealism (and the Idealist philosophy underpinning it; she understands Hegelian philosophy all-too-well) reverts effortlessly to barbarism once it comes to power. "Hers is the voice of a world forever slipping into a vertigo of silent rage while desperately trying to be human, a world which confused kindness with cruelty because it has already confused good with evil" (Andre Aciman). Awarded the Nobel Prize on the 20th Anniversary of the Fall of Communism, "the Committee has recognized an author who refuses to let the inhumane side of life under Communism be forgotten". There is an underlying message here that has been completely glossed over by the press: Milan Kundera, often nominated for the Prize, is probably never going to get it. Whereas Muller has been steadfast in her anti-Communist stance from the beginning (and suffered because of it), Kundera's personal history has been problematic: He was once a member of the Communist Party and he was once probably a spy. Kundera's famous statement, "The condemnation of totalitarianism doesn't deserve a novel", is obviously not shared by the Nobel. A "must-have" title for Herta Muller collectors. This title has been out-of-print as a hardcover for a long time and is now highly collectible. This is one of a handful of copies of the First American Edition still available online and despite its imperfection, is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. The other copy commands $500. This is an accessible alternative. A rare copy thus. Winner of The Kleist Prize, the most prestigious prize given to writers in German, in 1994. Winner of the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 1998 for "The Land of Green Plums". Winner of the European Literature Prize in 2006. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2009. One of the greatest living writers. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER HERTA MULLER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0805042954.

All the narrator's friends—teachers and students of vaguely dissident allegiance—betray her, do away with themselves, or both. As they do so, we see the way the totalitarian state comes to inhabit every human realm and how everyone, even the strongest, must either bend to the oppressors or resist them and thereby perish.
Herta Müller, herself a survivor of Ceausescu's police state, speaks from intimate experience. Scene by scene, in language at once harsh and poetic, she constructs a devastating picture of a society and a generation ruined by fear. In simple images of hieroglyphic power—policeman filling their pockets and mouths with green plums; girls sleeping with abattoir workers for bags of offal; a docile proletariat making things no one wants—"tin sheep and wooden watermelons"—Müller anatomizes a country and its citizens and the corruption that has rotted the core of both.
