Product Description

"The moment the second line on the pee stick turns pink, women discover they've entered a world of parenting experts."

Friends, family, colleagues, the UPS delivery guy -- suddenly everybody is a trove of advice, much of it contradictory and confusing. With dire warnings of what will happen if baby is fed on demand and even direr warnings of what will happen if he isn't, not to mention hordes of militant "lactivists," cosleeping advocates, and books on what to worry about next, modern parenthood can seem like a minefield.

In busy Mom-friendly short essays, "Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay" delivers the empathetic straight dirt on parenting, tackling everything from Mommy & Me classes ("Your baby doesn't need to be making friends at three months old -- you do But not with people you'll meet at Mommy & Me") to attachment parenting ("If you're holding your baby 24/7, that's not a baby, that's a tumor"). Stefanie Wilder-Taylor combines practical tips with sidesplitting humor and refreshing honesty, assuring women that they can be good mothers and responsibly make their own choices. A witty and welcome antidote to trendy parenting texts and scarifying case studies, "Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay" provides genuine support, encouragement, and indispensable common-sense advice.

Cute, easy read. Entertaining and in parts I laughed out loud. Not mind boggling or earth shattering but I doubt that's what Wilder-Taylor was going for.

One part I have to laugh about though is the chapter on what NOT to name your baby. She talks about not giving your child a weird name yet her daughter's name is Elby....

If you want a fun, easy read about being a new mom, a book that doesn't take itself or it's subject very serious, this is the book for you.
While not giving much advice, at least I didn't get any information I didn't already know (and I'm definitely no pro at being a mom!), it is a light read that basically lets you know that whatever you're doing is okay. Especially if you're not one of the super pro moms who have breast feeding, baby room decorations and any other baby topic completely under control.
The books touch - and make fun of - almost every subject that you can think of when you think of baby's first year - sleep deprivation, diaper sizes, breast feeding or bottle feeding, strollers, how to activate the baby etc etc. While the book is written by an American and therefore are mostly for an American public since not everything covered in the book is the same in Europe (at least not in Denmark - we don't choose a pediatrician for one), it can still give you a nice, fun overview of what can happen in the first year. It would probably be the perfect book to read while still expecting - that way you at least know that it's possible to survive baby blues with your humour still intact.
And after reading this book, I once more realize that I have a very easy baby (knock on wood!) - how else could I find the time to read this or any other book?!

I couldn't even finish this one. Probably only the second book of my life I didn't finish. I just couldn't relate to the lady so it wasn't funny to me.
She kept saying she was all for moms doing their own thing but then called them names and insulted them for their choices.

The one that especially irritated me (and I only got through chapter 3) was breastfeeding- she basically says good for you if you could do it- but you're an idiot- because it's not what I would do. She makes it sound like anyone that breastfed is a bossy know it all that wants to dish out unwanted advice... when really I couldn't care less if people want to breastfeed or use formula!

The other thing that really annoyed me is when she makes a comment to the effect that people who say they fall in love with their baby the minute they lay eyes on it are either liars or nuts. I am one of those moms that was instantly in love with my little guy!

She just comes across as judgmental, selfish and defensive!
Plus she has a potty mouth.
Someone I know read it and raved over it- when we discussed that I couldn't even finish it, she said it's only funny if you relate so if you think breastfeeding is ridiculous, didn't bond with your child, or could never make a decision about anything... the first three chapters will be a laugh and a half for you... otherwise- you may want to pass on this one.

This book was hilarious. Anyone who is a mom, or even a nanny can fully appreciate this book. If you are a new mom, or a mom to be, run right out and pick up a copy. You won't want to miss out on the advice this book has to offer.

Stefanie Wilder-Taylor holds nothing back in her candid tales from the first year of her first child's life. Each short story is a bit of advice that you might not hear at the local mommy and me classes. She talks about everything from nipples nearly falling off trying to breastfeed, to mommy personality types on the playground (avoid alpha mom, you will never be good enough for this one).

Her advice isn't researched per se, she has more of a hands on experience. She learned that the most important lessons you can find outside of a book, just by using your own common sense.

Stefanie also warns her readers of the many differing and strong opinions a new mother will face. From being bombarded at Babies R Us with questions about her views on breastfeeding (while only 6 months pregnant), to being scolded while at a stop light for not having the bar on her child safety seat fully lowered, Stefanie has seen and heard it all.

This book is written by a friend of Chelsea Handler. Its clear to see that they get along famously in their snarky commentary. Check this book out if you liked "Are You There Vodka? It's Me Chelsea" by Chelsea Handler.

My friend, Molly, loaned me this book before I went on maternity leave. And now, with a week before returning to work, I've finally found time to read it. I was impressed! Right before reading it, I read the quote on the cover and realized that Molly Shannon said it was funny... seemed like it was more likely to be funny than I realized. And then it lived up to my expectations. Score!

I especially like that this book essentially says read and learn all you want, but trust yourself. Well, rather, she suggests drinking a fair amount and getting an awesome haircut, but mostly she recommends using common sense and that's something that is missing from a lot of parenting books.

So thanks, Molly, for loaning it to me! I'll bring it back next week. :)
