This all-new fifth edition is a candid, humorous guide to everything there is...
This book has to be the all time best travel book for Maui!!! Not only did we find all the best snorkel spots and places to eat, but the book was so entertaining that even the kids were reading it. Great investment. (I've heard that the older versions include some places to go not in the newer versions. The authors were pretty generous about devulging secret places to go that were on private property or were environmentally sensitive to more folks exploring. These places were removed from later editions.)
I take this book along every time we travel to Maui. It has so many useful tips. Wayne and I agree with most of the restaurant and shopping reviews. One of the best resources is the list of beaches. We found our favorite beach in South Maui - Po o lena lena - via this book. The maps are excellent. It's rare for me to leave the condo on Maui without this book in the car or in my backpack. It really is indispensable. It's gotten some flack because in some sections the author has directions for hiking on private land. We always respect the privacy of others and keep our travels to public lands.
We just returned from Maui today, April 4, 2008, so things are fresh in my mind. Don't get me wrong - this book is good, but there were a few things I disagreed with. First, we took the Quicksilver snorkeling tour to the Molokini crater, and it was wonderful!! Would recommend that to anyone. Second, I disagreed with a few of the Road to Hana stops that they suggest. Things may have changed since the book was published, but some of the places we could not see and we followed the book to the letter. Third, the Road to Hana is CLOSED at the end!! They kind of say this in the book, but they write with the assumption that by the time you're reading the book, it will be open. IT IS NOT!! So don't think you are going to go all the way around the island through the Road to Hana. Once you get to the end you have to turn around. Fourth, we stayed at the Sands of Kahana, which they gave a so-so rating. We really enjoyed it! We had never been to Maui before, and of course, it is no Grand Wailea, but we had a great experience there. Clean, roomy, ocean view - great. And last, but not least, it seemed as if EVERYONE had this guidebook! It is not a secret anymore. So a lot of the places they say "no one goes here" have either been hit with a "no trespassing" sign due to too many people, or are crowded with other tourists. Other than those few disagreements, we found this book to be VERY helpful in getting around Maui.
If you are going to Maui, you need this book! The author writes with such entertaining and informative style, that it is truly fun to read. As a guidebook, it is invaluable! Because of this book, we were able to enjoy nearly empty beaches unknown to the average tourist and see sights that most visitors miss because they have no idea they exist. Avoid the tour buses and explore Maui on your own with the help of this excellent book.
An excellent guidebook if you want to do lots of exploring while visiting Maui. The directions are very accurate, and the book is arranged logically so that the traveler does not have to do a lot of work organizing an itinerary. Also has lots of detail about specific beaches if you are interested in that. Not much on lodging, and not the best restaurant reviews, but otherwise a very useful guide.
A quick read that speaks to everyone, regardless of your faith or views.
