Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964) was born in Savannah and began writing and illustrating short narratives during grade school. She attended Georgia State College for Women the Iowa Writer's Workshop. Stricken with Lupus at age 25, O'Connor returned to Milledgeville, where she lived with her mother at Andalusia until her early death at age 39. She is recognized as a master of the short story form and has won numerous awards including the National Book Award, numerous O. Henry Prize Awards.
