Product Description

Building an Ark: 101 Solutions to Animal Suffering is a first-of-its-kind, inspiring look at practical solutions for the humane treatment of animals and animal liberation.

Animal cruelty has many forms: factory farms, habitat destruction, animal product testing, the abuse and neglect of companion animals, the illegal trade in endangered species, unsustainable fishing, and climate change. All these create unnecessary suffering for animals and destroy animal rights.

For several decades there has been a global movement building, an ever-increasing consciousness that will soon affect animal welfare and the future of life on Earth—if it’s given time to do so. Building an Ark is the story of this movement. Extensively researched and drawing on practical examples from around the world, it provides a voice for both the animals and the humans who have dedicated their lives to building a sustainable future for all species.

The ark is ready for all to board. Individuals, action groups, schools, businesses, governments, farmers, fishers, developing nations—there’s a role for everyone on this journey. Building an Ark offers a host of solutions that, if adopted, will ensure that animals will suffer less today, and that humans and animals will share a more sustainable planet tomorrow.

Ethan Smith is a writer, animal welfare advocate, and author/editor of the anthology Softly On This Earth: Joining Those Who Are Healing Our Planet.

Guy Dauncey founded the Solutions Project and is author of several books, including Stormy Weather: 101 Solutions to Global Climate Change.

  • Rating A great introduction to animal suffering  Nov 17, 2007 (7 of 7 found this helpful)

This is an excellent book! It is the most comprehensive guide I have ever read on animal suffering, and serves as a great book for those who are new and interested to the topic, as well as seasoned animal rights activists and vegans.

The best part about this book is that after covering all the ways in which animals suffer everyday, it offers helpful solutions in the second half of the book to these problems that all of us can help participate in.

Truly a great book and a must-read!!! I highly reccommend this book to everyone.

  • Rating A must read for all generations!  Mar 31, 2008 (1 of 1 found this helpful)

Building an Ark: 101 Solutions to Animal Suffering (The Solutions Series)

Building an Ark; 101 Solutions to Animal Suffering, is a one-of-a-kind tool to help stop animal suffering around the world, by offering practical, easy to follow solutions that everyone can apply in their every day lives.

Our planet IS in peril, and animals play a key role in our ecology, evolution and the very fabric of our society. It is our fundamental responsibility to protect them and treat them as sentient beings, capable of emotions and feelings of pain. It is our fundamental responsibility as parents, teachers, business owners, and community leaders to inform ourselves and instill in our children, employees, colleagues and communities the very prime, most precious and vital understanding that ALL life is precious and must be treated as such.

It would be so simple to contemplate a chapter of Building an Ark at a time in a classroom, or to read it in the quietude of your own home and to commit, a step at a time, to changing our world to be a better place for all its inhabitants. This is one book no caring home or educational facility should be without.

  • Rating An invaluable resource for a better world   Oct 31, 2008

Building An Ark is a one of a kind book. Covering comprehensively the use of animals in our modern society and providing other relevant background, the first part of the book proves to be an invaluable resource for any student, animal lover or simply anyone curious about the world in which we live and our interactions with the animals and our environment. But more than an excellent reference book, it is also and above all a practical book with a developed second part that proposes concrete, simple and reasonable actions that can easily be put in practice by individuals, governments, businesses, and other groups. The greatest strength of this book is its empowerment value: no one can read the book without feeling that they can make a positive difference in the world. The book brings a nice message of hope and compassion!
