Product Description

"The first Christmas was a simple one. So simple that it had all the makings of a first-class disaster. It's a miracle it turned out well at all. In fact, that's the whole point. It really was, and remains, a miracle--the greatest miracle of all time. And it really was simple."
-Mike Huckabee

Christmas has become synonymous with shopping, overindulging, competition, and stress. But according to Mike Huckabee (who was a pastor before getting into politics), that was never God's intention. Going back to the Nativity, Christmas is supposed to be about simple things: faith, love, family, and hope. The hard part, in today's crazy world, is remembering that those simple things are the most precious of all.

Now Huckabee recounts twelve Christmas memories--often funny, sometimes deeply moving--that range from his childhood in Arkansas to his years as a young husband and father to his time as a governor and then a presidential candidate. These true stories will help you smile, take a deep breath, and maybe slow down your own holiday treadmill. For instance:

As kids, Mike and his sister would sneak open their gifts before Christmas, play with them, then rewrap them so their parents wouldn't notice. The plan worked great for several years until one Christmas morning when young Mike unwrapped a brand-new football...that was covered in mud. That led to a powerful lesson about patience.

In 1966, like millions of preteens, Mike was obsessed with the Beatles. He dug in his heels, telling his parents that if they wouldn't buy him a guitar for Christmas, he didn't want anything at all. He was selfish, stubborn, and obnoxious, with no idea what it would take for working-class parents to find an extra $99. It took many years for him to understand the sacrifice they made for that life-changing gift--or how it connected to the Lord's own sacrifice.

Only a year after Mike and his wife, Janet, had gotten married, she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer at the shocking age of twenty. That Christmas of 1975 was the most terrifying and upsetting they would ever know, as they wondered if they would ever get to share another one. But in retrospect, it's a Christmas they will treasure forever.

If you're looking for a little clarity, sanity, and inspiration at this insane time of year, you're sure to enjoy A Simple Christmas.

  • Rating A Simple Christmas is a Christmas must!  Nov 14, 2009 (38 of 39 found this helpful)

The sweetest book I've read in years. Regardless of political party, it will melt your heart. No politics here just great memories of a simplier time. I laughed and I cried and you will too.

  • Rating Simple Is Beautiful  Nov 17, 2009 (12 of 13 found this helpful)

If you are looking for an inspirational book for the holidays, this is it. I was very surprised at the stories Mike Huckabee shares with the reader. I didn't realize all the hardships he and his family have experienced and the problems he has overcome. I now understand who this talented man really is. Whether you agree with his political views or not, this is a must read.

  • Rating Simply great  Nov 18, 2009 (4 of 4 found this helpful)

A Simple Christmas: Twelve Stories that Celebrate the True Holiday Spirit by Mike Huckabee is a pretty gentle reminder that the spirit of Christmas isn't at Macy's, or Belk's, or under the tree on Christmas morning.

Mike Huckabee shares twelve candid and heartwarming stories from his life. The story of an early Christmas in his married life when nothing about the future was assured is one of the most touching and sincere lessons in the book. What comes shining through is that while Huckabee seems self assured and on point as a politician and political spokesman, his personal life has been one of ups and downs......not unlike the rest of us.

A Simple Christmas is a gift you should give yourself and those you love.

    I highly recommend.

    Peace and Merry Christmas

  • Rating A Book With Two Purposes  Nov 20, 2009

New York Times bestselling author Mike Huckabee releases a "remember when" book in time for the holidays.

A Simple Christmas takes you back to his childhood memories of the Beatles and putting on lip syncing concerts for the neighborhood to leaving the Governor's mansion of Arkansas.

There are 12 chapters that deal with one simple idea (i.e. Patience, Trials, etc...) and how his experiences of Christmas personify those ideas.

Not every story has a happy ending, but they all succeed in their purpose which is to help you understand Governor Huckabee's past and what shaped him into the person he is today.

Huckabee is clever. This book serves two purposes: 1) a book released in time for the holidays that makes an excellent gift. 2) helps Americans feel as if they've gotten to know the "real" Huckabee so they will be more inclined to vote for him come 2012.

In any case, A Simple Christmas is a nice read and look into someone's past and their own story.
