Popular is understood here in a sense close to its etymological origin, i.e. relating to ordinary people. This notion is relevant not only to writers or artists (one may think of the contrast between high culture and low culture / popular culture for instance), but also to all those who analyse the politics, the history, the culture and the language of modern, industrial societies.
