Comments about Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age:
For some decades, Dr. Sweet's murder trial has been a subject of dinner-table discussion in some Michigan homes; rarely mentioned in others. It is an important case for anyone interested in Michigan History to understand. That said, it did NOT "ignite the civil rights struggle" in Michigan; work in Michigan for civil rights could better be understood to have begun before the Civil War, with free black citizens in Cass County operating the Underground Rail Road, and Quakers and other people of faith working to bring their countries' laws more into conformance with God's law. Detroit, largely because of its former wealth and industrial success, drew a lot of people from various and sometimes not nice backgrounds (Ark of Justice does point out that the hooligans who stoned Dr. Sweet's house were far poorer and less educated than he.), who went the other direction, making Detroit in many instances utterly lawless. In later years, vis., in the 60s riots and under the leadership of Mayor Coleman Young, the lawlessness was committed by blacks every bit as violent as the mob the Sweets faced, and as foul in their antisemitism as that mob was in its racial bigotry.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
